Omphale was the Queen of Lydia, an ancient kingdom now known as modern-day Turkey. In those days, Greeks considered the Kingdom of Lydia as a land of Barbarians though it was rich in gold, which Lydians knew how to refine. Queen Omphale purchased Heracles for huge sums after he went to an Oracle, who told him he must be sold as a slave, a penalty for "unintentional" murder. As part of his service to Queen Omphale, Heracles buried Icarus after he fell to death. After a few years, she set Heracles free, married him, and had two children.
