The Titan Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man so that he could develop civilization. Zeus, who had planned to keep mankind in a primitive state, punished Prometheus by chaining him to a mountaintop. Every day Zeus' eagle devoured Prometheus's liver, which grew back each night.
