Ariadne Study Drawing

from $70.00

The great hero and prince of Athens, Theseus, was sent to Crete to rescue the Athenian maidens and youths who were annually sacrificed to the monster Minotaur. He could do this with the help of the princess of Minos, Ariadne. As a reward, he married her, intending to take her home to Athens. During a rest on the island of Naxos, Ariadne engaged in a savage Bacchanalian rite that included human sacrifice. Theseus was so horrified that he sailed away and abandoned her while she was still in a drunken stupor.
