He could do this with the help of the princess of Minos, Ariadne. As a reward, he married her, intending to take her home to Athens. During a rest on the island of Naxos, Ariadne engaged in a savage Bacchanalian rite that included human sacrifice. Theseus was so horrified that he sailed away and abandoned her while she was still in a drunken stupor.
