Hermes, the messenger of the gods and protector of travelers, wears a felt hat equipped with wings to assist him in his duties. He carries a winged rod entwined with snakes called a caduceus which was said to have the power to make people fall asleep or wake up and also made peace between claimants. Hermes moved quickly and freely between the worlds of the mortal and the divine, aided by his winged sandals, described as beautiful, golden, and immortal. His swiftness was an exalted art; he could take the roads with the wind speed.
